The Routeburn Track can be walked either way from Fiordland or from Mt. Aspiring National park. Since we chose to do a day walk rather than the whole track we started from the Divide in Fiordland. “The Divide” is the lowest pass across the Southern Alps.
We started from a carpark just off the road returning from the Milford Sound. From here it is a short jaunt to the Key Summit where there’s a view mountains surrounding on every side. There is delicate vegetation around, so a boardwalk replaces the path for walking to protect it from tramping feet. On a clear day, this view does not disappoint!
If you can’t do an entire Great Walk (time, cost, health/fitness) the Key Summit on the Routeburn Track is a great option to get a slice of the greatness.
