Surprising, Sunny & Socialist

Stockholm surprised me. I’d heard it was a “nice city” but this is vague, and unless a place is particularly drear you can call it “nice.” It’s big. Stockholm is like Venice but giant and with some elbow room. Built on 14 islands. It’s also built on Ikea, Volvo and a host of other successful businesses.

Palaces and massive buildings are topped with patinated roofs. The cathedrals were tall and the underground metro deep- something like 6 layers of subway run in and out of the Stockholm city center. The residents are well-dressed, I haven’t seen a more posh group of people since leaving London. “Fika” (Swedish coffee break) it seems is the most important part of the day for the people of Stockholm, and they don’t miss it.
